Join a discussion and montage of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s performance paying tribute to the history of Black Wall Street.
This presentation examines the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s “Greenwood,” which shines a light on the heart-wrenching story of the affluent Black neighborhood in Tulsa, Oklahoma, that was the site of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. That violence destroyed 35 blocks of homes and businesses, leaving thousands displaced.
Renowned choreographer Donald Byrd collaborated with the dance theater to create this soul-stirring composition commemorating one of the world’s most tragic injustices. Join host Harriette Cole for a screening of scenes from the work and a discussion about the creative process with Robert Battle, the artistic director of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.
